The new movie, CIVIL WAR, imagines what could happen if the extreme political division in America erupted into the horror of open warfare. Watching it is like having a nightmare. The film is intended to be a cautionary tale, full of senseless killing and shocking violence that’s not easy to watch. It’s exciting and disturbing at the same time. The best thing about CIVIL WAR is the great performance of Kirsten Dunst as a disillusioned war photographer who has come to realize that her vivid photos of combat atrocities in other countries haven’t prevented her fellow Americans from taking up arms against each other. CIVIL WAR is a powerful film that puts audiences through the wringer. But some of it just isn’t believable, and there’s at least a hint of exploitation in some of the shocking violence. (In Theaters)
