HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A retired Hawaii Island police commander has been charged in a domestic dispute in Kona, officials said.

The suspect, 57-year-old Mitchell Kanehailua Jr., was charged Monday with violation of a protective order, first-degree attempted burglary, third-degree assault and third-degree attempted assault.

Kona patrol officers responded to a possible domestic dispute around 5:15 a.m. Sunday in the 73-4000 block of Hawaii Belt Road.

When police arrived, the 41-year-old female victim reported that her ex-boyfriend, Kanehailua Jr., went onto her property and tried to get into her home.

Kanehailua Jr. was confronted by a woman outside the home who he apparently tried to hit, then several other men came to the woman’s aid and held him until police arrived.

He was transported to the Kealakehe police station.

His bail has been set at $9,000.

Kanehailua Jr. was a former Hawaii Police Department assistant chief who retired in September 2019.

An investigation is ongoing.
