HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Heads up, drivers: The state Department of Transportation announced Friday it will be closing portions of the H-1 Freeway throughout the month of March for roadwork and emergency repairs.

Officials said there will be weekend lane closures on the westbound H-1 Freeway in the vicinity of Ice Palace and Kahuapaani Street starting on March 1.

The DOT says crews will be repairing the concrete deck of the freeway, which would impact least two to three of the far-left lanes.

Work includes removing sections of the concrete deck over a 3,000-square-foot area, replacing steel reinforcements, pouring new concrete and patching. The estimated cost of the repairs is approximately $2.8 million.

The road closure will be in effect from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. until March 24.

Here’s a breakdown of the closures for these repairs:

  • 9 p.m. Friday, March 1 through 8 a.m. Saturday, March 2
  • 9 p.m. Saturday, March 2 through 8 a.m. Sunday, March 3
  • 9 p.m. Friday, March 8 through 8 a.m. Saturday, March 9

  • 9 p.m. Friday, March 22 through 8 a.m. Saturday, March 23
  • 9 p.m. Saturday, March 23 through 8 a.m. Sunday, March 24

DOT says nearby residents might experience increased noise between 10 p.m. and midnight as crews work to remove damaged deck sections.

In addition, DOT says there will be lane closures on the H-1 Freeway in the eastbound direction between the Halawa Interchange and Pearl Harbor Interchange for the Salt Lake Rehabilitation Project.

Details are as follows:

  • Two left lanes will be closed from 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 8, through 8:30 p.m. Saturday, March 9.
  • Three left lanes will be closed from 8:30 p.m. Saturday, March 9, through 4 a.m. Monday, March 11.

Emergency bridge repairs will be happening on the westbound H-1 Freeway in sequence with the Rehabilitation Project. Three lanes will be closed at the Kahuapaani Street underpass from 8 p.m. Friday, March 8, through 3 a.m., Monday, March 11.

DOT says the H-1 Freeway Salt Lake Rehabilitation Project will perform a full-depth reconstruction of the H-1 Freeway, replace guardrails, reconstruct gutters, install pavement marking and rumble strips, and repair signage.

The estimated completion date of the project is scheduled for October 2024.

Drivers are advised to drive with caution, follow all traffic signs, and plan their commutes ahead of time to get to their destinations.

Officers will be on-site to assist with safety procedures. Officials said first responders and TheBus will not be allowed through the work zone.
