HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii Pacific University earned national recognition in an energy tech competition.

The team, made up of four undergraduate engineering students, won third place after pitching their business plans to a panel of industry judges at the national EnergyTech University Prize 2024 in Austin, Texas.

The team, called “Ion Clean PV,” competed against dozens of teams from schools like Stanford University, Yale University and UCLA.

“I am immensely proud of our students’ remarkable achievement in securing third place in the EnergyTech University Prize 2024,” said Assistant Professor Arif Rahman, PhD. “Their dedication, ingenuity, and collaborative spirit have been inspiring.”

The winners received a $10,000 cash prize, plus a $3,000 cash prize for advancing to the Western Regional Finals of the competition last month.

The HPU team includes Matthew Poe, Madison Hara, Brandon Senesan and Clarissa Burha.
