HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - April is National Volunteer Month and Hawaii is celebrating the occasion as well.

Non-profits across the state are working to get the word out about opportunities to pitch in and help out.

A cleanup at your favorite beach, helping kupuna in need or mentoring keiki. The possibilities for volunteering are endless.

”It is critical for us to renew our connections and build our community fabric by volunteering for nonprofits and projects that each of us believe in,” said Keone Kealoha, Kanu Hawaii’s Executive Director.

“Providing volunteer support not only benefits the hundreds of nonprofits protecting our special places and our people but it also deepens our connections with one another, building trust for the times when we need it most.”

Leaders are calling on the public to start volunteering in their communities to mark National Volunteer Month.

Kealoha says that during the pandemic, there was a sharp decrease in volunteerism for many in the non-profit community. Those challenges remain today despite gathering and other restrictions being lifted.

Kanu Hawaii is hoping that changes in the near future and part of that change could come through Hawaii’s young people.

”Kanu Hawaii also encourages residents and visitors alike to sign the Pledge To Our Keiki. The Pledge Partnership Program is a way for local businesses and organizations to play an active role in improving visitor stewardship in Hawaii. As part of the program, businesses work closely with the Kanu Hawaii team to incorporate impactful changes to encourage responsible visitor behavior based on their industry and current tourism challenges,” added Keoloha.

This year, the nonprofit is hoping to engage over 20,000 volunteers in over 600 events across the state.
