HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Summer can be a magical time for Hawaii’s keiki but it’s also challenging time many of their parents — and the YMCA of Honolulu says it’s here to help.

Keeping young people active and engaged during the summer months requires a lot of work and all too often, spending more of the family budget.

With YMCA’s summer camps it not only saves your wallet but it helps bring enriching experiences to everyone involved.

”We do have financial aid available for all of our programs and activities. We realize it can be tough to afford camp every year,” said Drew Markey, senior program director at Camp Erdman.

“We’re grateful to share that our current fundraising campaign will bring in in more $1 million to help give more kids access to camp.”

The historic camp was first leased by the YMCA Honolulu from Walter F. Dillingham in 1926 for just $1 a year.

Later in 1931, the land was donated to the YMCA Honolulu in honor of 26-year-old Harold Randolph Erdman, Dillingham’s nephew who was killed in a polo accident.

Hundreds of Hawaii families have made lifelong memories at Camp Erdman and that tradition continues today with summer camps, family camps and a wealth of other activities.

”We still have plenty of spots for campers but we do traditionally start to see more demand closer to summer. We recommend putting a deposit down so you can pick the week you want. The deposit is just $1,” said Lisa Ontai, VP of Marketing and Mission Advancement, YMCA of Honolulu.
