(Hawaii News Now) -

Come and experience Korean culture from the past and the present at the 13

th

Annual

Korean Festival.  As one of the largest cultural festivals of the year in Hawaii, the Korean Festival will once again have the best flavors of Korea, entertainment and culture exhibits. New to this year is that the event has been temporarily moved to Magic Island because of the ongoing construction improvements at Kapiolani Park.

The

festival will run from 10:00am to 9:00pm on Saturday, July 12, 2014. The Korean Festival presents a unique, authentic taste of Korean culture through food, dance, art, music, and entertainment. The program of festival events includes performances such as taekwondo (Korean martial arts) demonstration, Korean fan and drum dances, and a Korean song contest.

The festival also provides interactive activities, such as Korean cooking lessons from talented chefs from the community, and the festival favorite kim chi eating contest. Attendees have enjoyed perusing through the various unique products and services available in the product tents, and savored their favorite Korean foods, such as kalbi (BBQ shortribs), tteokbokki (small rice cakes in spicy sauce), and mandoo (dumpling).  This festival is a culinary delight for those who enjoy Korean foods.

The headliner for this year’s Korean festival is M.Pire, a popular male KPOP group. M.Pire is a seven-member South Korean idol group, signed under Benjamin Entertainment and CMG Chorok Stars. The group first performed in 2013 at Korea's largest annual K-Pop concert, ”Dream Concert". The name 'M.Pire', pronounced as 'empire' is a combination of the words 'music' and 'vampire' to signify the need for music to continue living. M.Pire has won numerous awards, including "Rookie Award" at the Korean Wave Industry Awards, and the "Rookie Award" at the 2014 Asia Model Festival Awards.

M.Pire will be performing at 7:00pm on July 12. There will be an open to the media sound check and interview opportunity at 2:00pm on Friday, July 11 at Magic Island.

The Korean Festival

is an annual event run by the Hawaii Korean Chamber of Commerce, with the support of dozens of community organizations and businesses, and hundreds of volunteers. The purpose of the Korean Festival is to share, promote, and raise awareness of Korean culture in the community. Additionally, proceeds from the Festival are used to fund service projects and ventures which benefit the Korean and larger community in Hawaii, including an annual scholarship fund for outstanding, civic-minded students entering or currently enrolled in college.
