(Hawaii News Now) - Pacific Islands Fisheries Group (PIFG) continues the largest community celebration of Hawaii's fishing and seafood heritage. With over 20,000 attendees in previous years, the 8th annual Hawaii Fishing and Seafood Festival (HFSF) has been expanded to a weeklong celebration.

This year's event will be held on October 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Honolulu Fishing Village, Pier 38.  The festival's purpose is to promote awareness of marine conservation, ocean safety, responsible fishing and highlight Hawaii's magnificent seafood industry.

This year PIFG is affirming our cultural heritage by serving our community through several events preceding the festival. "Fishing for Hawaii's Hungry" is a two-day trolling tournament (Oct. 5th-6th) with the catch donated to the Institute of Human Services. The "Sea-To-Me Tasting Night" (Oct. 5th) will be an evening of fine wine and delectable seafood to benefit the University of Hawaii Community College Culinary Programs. To top it off, the Keiki Art Contest will award Hawaii students who express the importance of our fishing community through art.

The week's events culminate on October 13 where over 100 vendors will flood iconic Honolulu Fishing Village, Pier 38. An eclectic mix of fishing and ocean related businesses, agencies and non-profits will be represented. Festival activities include fishing workshops, tours of fishing vessels, tours of the fish auction facility, live fishing demonstrations, Gyotaku printing, seafood cooking demonstrations and lots of games for the keiki.

Live entertainment and trip giveaways will also be featured on the main stage. Admission to the festival is free. Public parking and shuttle service will be at Honolulu Community College starting at 8 a.m. There will also be limited free valet parking at Pier 38.
