(Hawaii News Now) - Joe Rice's retirement after 17 years as president of Mid-Pacific Institute will be celebrated on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. with a dinner at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom.  Rice will unveil his "Joe Rice Helping Hands Fund" for disadvantaged students at the dinner, which is designed to kick start the fund.

Rice said he was inspired to create the fund because he had many helping hands" as he made his way up the educational ladder into a career that led to the presidency of a prominent private school.

Rice said there are many young students in Hawaii who badly need help and who would never dream of being able to attend an independent school.
