Kamehameha Schools to pay out nearly $900M to Maui wildfire settlement

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Kamehameha Schools disclosed Wednesday that it will pay out nearly $900 million as part of the $4 billion global settlement for thousands of Maui fire victims.

The trust owns more than a thousand acres of former sugar land around Lahaina.

The lawsuits say Maui County warned Kamehameha Schools about overgrown foliage before last year’s fire ripped through the dry grass on its property.

MAUI WILDFIRES DISASTER ONE YEAR LATER

The school says they will pay out their share over time.

The rest of the money wwill be paid by Hawaiian Electric, the state, Hawaiian Telcom, Spectrum and other landowners.
