HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A nonprofit leader plans to challenge Hawaii County Mayor Mitch Roth in this year’s election.

Breeani Kobayashi is the second person to announce a bid against Roth.

She’s the chair for the Hawaii Island United Way and vice president of Hui Kahu Malama, a nonprofit organization that addresses the county’s physician shortage. Last year, Pacific Business News News named her among the state’s “Most Admired Leaders.”

She said addressing economic hardship on Hawaii Island is a key priority.

Kimo Alameda has also tossed his hat in the race.
