HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Looking to pursue a career as an engineer? The City and County of Honolulu is working to hire more engineers in multiple departments.

Leaders who are looking to fill those rolls say attracting quality candidates can be challenging at times.

Chief Engineer and Manager of the Board of Water Supply Earnest Lau says while private sector engineering jobs can sometimes pay better, the work you can do through public service is often times more rewarding.

“You can make a difference in your community and directly help people. We are the front line. We are the front line for dealing with climate change too, and you can achieve a better balance between your career and your family,” said Lau.

In order to attract candidates, the city is hosting an Engineer Open House on Thursday, Aug. 29 at the Ala Wai Golf Course Clubhouse.

Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP by Monday, Aug. 26.

“This is an opportunity to meet city engineers, also meet the mayor, who’s in charge of city government and look for ways to work in the areas of storm water, wastewater, drinking water, also our road systems, maintaining our city streets and transportation systems,” added Lau.
