The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority’s Destination Management Action Plans (DMAPs), a collaborative effort between HTA, community, local counties, and island visitor bureaus, aim to redefine tourism’s trajectory in Hawaiʻi’s major islands. These plans, outlined in HTA’s Strategic Plan 2020-2025, prioritize responsible tourism by addressing issues like over crowding and strained infrastructure while preserving natural and cultural assets.

The Lānaʻi Guide App was created by the Lānaʻi Culture & Heritage Center. The free app contains community-supported hikes, driving tours, moʻolelo, history and an augmented reality walking tour of Lānaʻi City. Through this free-to-download app, visitors can embrace their kuleana to visit responsibly. For more information, visit www.lanaichc.org.

Lānaʻi Cat Sanctuary was built from the ground up by the industrious people who run this first-rate cat haven. What was once dry brushland is now a lush, 4-acre purradise. By giving feral cats a home for life, the sanctuary also protects the island’s many endangered birds. HI Now learns how visitors are supporting native bird conservation efforts by visiting and volunteering at the Lānaʻi Cat Sanctuary, in partnership with the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority, through the Mālama Hawaiʻi program. For more information, visit lanaicatsanctuary.org.

HI Now learns how the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority partnered with a group of residents—members of the Lānaʻi Advisory Group – who created community-driven messaging for visitors to educate visitors how to visit responsibly and to support the local economy in Lānaʻi City.
