GRAPHIC: Man assaulted while walking dog dies from his injuries, police say
BALTIMORE (WJZ) - A suspect is facing manslaughter charges after an elderly man died following a violent assault in Baltimore.
It happened Saturday as the victim was walking his dog. The assault was caught on camera.
The video is graphic and may be disturbing to some viewers.
“He shouldn’t be dead. He shouldn’t be dead,” Mary Margaret Philpot said.
The violent assault led to the death of her husband, 74-year-old David Philpot.
They were married for more than 30 years.
“He wouldn’t be dead if it weren’t for this person,” she said.
David Philpot was out walking his dog on Saturday afternoon along Eastern Avenue in Fells Point, Maryland when he was approached by a man.
“He said, ‘This guy asked me for money,’ and he told him, ‘I don’t have any money,’” Mary Margaret Philpot said.
Baltimore Police said that man is 43-year-old Timothy Clinedinst.
Video obtained by WJZ taken by a surveillance camera on a nearby business, appears to show Clinedinst pushing David Philpot to the ground before attacking him.
“He pushed him. He kicked him. He choked him,” his wife said.
After police arrived, David Philpot was taken to a hospital. He died a day later.
Mary Margaret Philpot said the attack aggravated a pre-existing heart condition.
“It’s so hard to imagine that anybody would do anything like that,” she said.
After David Philpot’s death, police started searching for Clinedinst.
He was arrested Monday and has been charged with manslaughter.
“It’s just a senseless act. It’s incomprehensible,” E.C. Pops owner Doug Yakey said.
David Philpot and his wife are well-known fixtures in Fells Point, Maryland. They retired there together about a decade ago.
Friends at a nearby business tell WJZ they are heartbroken.
“Dave was just an incredible soul. He was very much like a fatherly figure, not with just me, but we everyone he came in contact with,” Yakey said.
Mary Margaret Philpot said her husband was “my hero. He was my world.”
Clinedinst has been charged with manslaughter in the case.
