HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The United States Olympic men’s volleyball team captured the bronze medal at the Paris Summer Games on Friday.

USA swept past Italy in three sets in the bronze medal match.

There were four players with Hawaii ties that helped the U.S. reach the podium.

Kamehameha alum Micah Christenson notched 8 digs, a kill and a block while running USA’s offense at the setter position.

Punahou grad and libero Erik Shoji dished out a match-high 12 digs while former UH All-American Taylor Averill got 7 kills on 8 swings.

This is the United States’ second Bronze medal in three Olympic Games and the second Bronze for Christenson and Shoji while Averill and Kaneohe native Micah Ma’a get their first Olympic medal.

Host France and Poland will square off in the gold medal match on Saturday.
