HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The UH Women’s Soccer team opened Fall training camp on Wednesday preparing for it’s longest season since 2012.

The Rainbow Wahine will play 20 regular season games this year, a significant increase from 15 last season.

The ‘Bows enter camp riding momentum from last year, making it all the way to the Big West Tournament for only the second time in program history.

“That extra five yards, that extra five minutes, that’s what’s gonna count, and perspective is everything and hindsight is 2020 and we can’t lose sight of that and how horrible it felt to lose in those moments and I think we have all the reason to capitalize on it this year,” said UH Forward Fabiola Zamora.

The ‘Bows return 18 players including All-Big West first-team forward Amber Gilbert.

“Amber has become a student of the game, she watches film, she has lots of questions, her athleticism when you have that kind of speed I mean she put up some numbers this spring that our sports scientist was like we haven’t seen these numbers from any of our athletes,” said head coach Michele Nagamine.

Meanwhile as construction continues at Cooke field, the team is practicing at off campus sites.

“I’m not gonna lie like it is pretty hard because like we’re not always able to use the fields that we need like either at softball or Ching or MidPac, even the parking situation here is not the best but our team is really good at just being positive, we want to play, we want to do what we can, where we can,” said UH Forward Amber Gilbert.

Returning to the islands are two local standouts, who were both part of state championship teams in high school — Punahou graduate Jordyn Eldredge Sagapolutele and Kamehameha’s Leila Kahoano.

The Rainbow Wahine open the season August 15 against Georgia Southern.
