HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Exactly one year ago this week, wind-whipped wildfires tore through Maui, decimating Lahaina and forever changing the landscape of the historic community.

The events of Aug. 8, 2023 claimed the lives of 102 people and destroyed the town in what is now the deadliest wildfire disaster in the United States in more than a century.

Many lost loved ones, and thousands lost their homes — some of which were generational.

In the months since, residents continue to cope with grief, while others struggle with guilt and trauma, haunted by the memories of that day. And while the community mourns, it also faces a tough uphill battle to rebuild.

While looking at lessons learn, efforts are also underway across all islands to ensure that a disaster like this never happens again.
