Incumbent Roth to face challenger Kimo Alameda in general election runoff for Hawaii Island mayor
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Incumbent Mitch Roth is set to face challenger Kimo Alameda in a general election runoff for Hawaii Island mayor.
After the second printout in the primary election on Saturday, Roth was leading with about 37% of the votes, while Alameda had the second-highest with nearly 27%.
“We’re much better off from where we were took over four years ago and I think in another four years, we’re gonna be much better off than where we are now,” Roth said. “We’ve got a lot of big projects we’re working on, and we really want to get those projects done.”
One of the earliest candidates to announce his campaign was Alameda, who served as the executive of the county’s Office of Aging under Mayors Billy Kenoi and Harry Kim. Alameda had snagged an endorsement from the Hawaii Iron Workers Union Local 625.
Alameda said he was “super excited” after the primary election results.
“I mean, you know that tells us that over 60% of people on this beautiful island want change an that’s what we felt coming into it, and it had stand to be true, so we just got to continue to push the good, you know, fight the good fight,” Alameda said. “We have a lot of supporters and, and it’s going to be growing, right.”

Despite the criticism, Roth says the county has made strides under his leadership.

It was a crowded race for mayor with Roth against six challengers.
The general election is Nov. 5.
